Course Goals：
Students successfully completing the course should have the following skills
and understandings:
•Ability to conduct exploratory analyses of data, making use of graphical and
numerical techniques to study patterns and departures from patterns.
•Understanding of important characteristics of data distributions including
shape, location, variability, and unusual values.
•Ability to evaluate relationships among variables, distinguishing between
association and causation.
•Knowledge of sampling/data collection methods and appropriate analysis
methods; Understanding of assumptions and conditions related to valid use
of data from controlled experiments, observational studies, and sample
surveys.
•Knowledge of probability models to describe random phenomena.
•Ability to apply probability models to describe data distributions and to
interpret statistical methods for estimation and hypothesis testing.
•Ability to draw conclusions from data applying appropriate methods of
statistical inference.

Peter J. Kempthorne
麻省理工学院
Kempthorne博士本科毕业于哈佛大学的应用数学专业，并成为美国大学优等生荣誉学会成员。而后，在伦敦大学帝国理工学院获得统计学的硕士学位，在加利福尼亚伯克利大学获得博士学位。Kempthorne博士曾在哈佛大学做过助理教授，并在此期间获得了由美国国家科学基金会颁发的数学科学研究奖学金。之后他以客座助理教授的身份进入了麻省理工斯隆管理学院，并晋升为管理副教授。
1990年至1998年间，Kempthorne博士还曾担任麻省理工学院斯隆管理学院的首席研究科学家，在计算研究中心 (CCREMS)和在国际金融服务研究中心(IFSRC)进行经济学和管理科学的研究。他曾是风险管理团队的活跃分子，对RiskMetrics理论进行了整合。2013年，Kempthorne博士以金融数学和统计理论讲师的身份加入麻省理工数学系。
自1992年以来，Kempthorne博士一直通过其公司Kempthorne Analytics, Inc.在金融和统计学方面提供着咨询服务。主要客户包括：花旗银行、Colonial/Liberty基金、巴黎国家银行、佳能、富达管理研究公司、Mathsoft/Insightful公司、默克公司、RXR和普林斯顿品牌经纪公司。曾参加的项目包括：股票市场的资产选择建模、风险管理的统计分析、软件风险管理的综合设计和实现、对衍生品定价的财务分析、灾难风险分析—保险计划的建模和定价、针对市场交易数据的股票市场微观结构建模、交易系统的开发、设计和实施。
自1995年开始，Kempthorne博士一直担任着投资经理，运用其先进的统计分析方式来管理各种投资方案。从2010年到2012年间，他还曾担任过IKOS, CIF Ltd.公司的基金经理和高级研究员。Kempthorne博士在1995年与人共同创立了Chronos资产管理公司，并在1996年创立Summa Capital管理公司。作为两个投资公司的创办者，他运用自己的专利技术开发了统计交易模型和交易系统，对交易进行监控、分析。Kempthorne Analytics公司目前以投资顾问公司注册，为零售客户提供系统管理和量化投资项目的支持。
